Giving dog owners a nutrient-rich sustainable everyday diet — the superfood, barramundi.
Barramundi offers plenty of amazing health benefits for your dog! It is:
- naturally high in protein (more on that below)
- high in essential amino acids
- a sustainable and environmentally friendly food source
- full of additional vitamins that your dog needs
- a fish high in Omega-3
- lower in fat than some other fish
- lower in mercury than other marine proteins
Put simply, barramundi is a great, healthy and sustainable source of food for your dog that is suitable for everyday eating.
Plus, studies have shown that barramundi is a good attractant—which means it’s potentially more palatable to dogs than food made from land animal proteins.
We worked with a leading pet nutritionist to create a dog food that provides all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals your dog needs, in a convenient dry kibble that can be served at every meal.
A sustainably sourced dog food
Barramundi is native to Australia and South East Asia. It is well suited for aquaculture due to its fast-growing size, and is farmed year-round ensuring good supply. Using the entire fish in production means there’s zero waste matter to consider. Farmed barramundi is traceable and supports the recovery of wild fish.
Our barramundi is soured from a leading Australian aquaculture provider, using state-of-the-art technology in its fish hatchery in Victoria. The farm water is geothermically heated spring water, free from industrial or biological pollutants, making it very safe for your dog to eat. For each fish that is produced, one in the wild is saved. The rise in aquaculture prevents damaging overfishing in our oceans and waterways.
A high-protein alternative
To be at optimal health, dogs need a naturally derived pet food high in proteins from meat.
Barramundi is an excellent source of proteins, because fish are naturally higher in protein than many other meats. Barramundi has about 21 grams of protein per 100 grams—about one fifth protein per serve.
Dogs need protein for its many health benefits, especially amino acids which benefit:
- muscles
- tendons
- bones
- ligaments
- cartilage
- hair
- skin
- nails
- hormones
High-quality proteins from barramundi contain all the essential amino acids dogs need, which is great for cellular function and growth.
Plus, protein helps your dog feel satisfied and full after a meal, giving them the energy to go about a busy day.
Good for gut health
Just like humans, your dog has billions of bacteria in its gastrointestinal tract, called the gut microbiome. A healthy microbiome is good for your dog’s overall health. It helps with nutrient absorption and prevents problems like inflammatory bowel disease, digestive problems and even diabetes. Our Ocean Fish & Barramundi dog food (indeed, all our dog food varieties) come stocked with plenty of prebiotics and probiotics to encourage a healthy gut.
Good for weight loss
Barramundi is naturally lower in fat than other fish, as well as lower in fat than beef, poultry or pork meat. It’s also a low calorie fish. This naturally makes it an excellent choice for dogs with a few extra kilos to shed. And with about one third of Aussie dogs struggling with weight, it’s a common problem many dog owners face! The high protein in barramundi helps with satiation, meaning your dog is likely to feel fuller for longer and less inclined to be begging at the food bowl one hour after dinner!
Good for heart health
Barramundi has the highest levels of Omega-3s of any white fish, and is also rich in Omega-6 fatty acids. Both can help balance cholesterol levels, which reduces strain on the heart and the chance of developing coronary heart diseases. Because of the natural lower fat content, barramundi can help with weight loss, which in turn promotes lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, which are beneficial for heart health too.
Good source of antioxidants
Barramundi is naturally high in the antioxidant selenium. Because they remove free radicals from body cells, antioxidants are known to reduce the risk of many diseases, including heart disease and many cancers.
Good for senior dogs
Fish protein has been found to be effective substitutes for poultry by-product meal, giving high nutritional value for senior dogs. Plus, as older dogs tend to gain weight, the low-fat, low-calorie barramundi is often a healthier alternative to dog foods based on other animal meats like beef, chicken or lamb.
Good for skin and coat
Because we use the entire fish in production, the keratin in scales may promote a shiny coat and healthy skin. Amino acids from protein are also good for supporting a lustrous coat and optimal skin condition.
Good for allergies
When your dog has food allergies, land animal protein feed may be the culprit. Dogs with allergies or digestive problems may benefit from trialling barramundi-based food as an alternative, which may be gentler on delicate digestive systems.
Good for disease prevention
Our barramundi meat is a protein hydrolysate, giving it lower molecular weight and shorter peptides, which has many proven health benefits in different animals. Short, bioactive peptides may lower blood pressure, kill microbes, reduce inflammation, prevent the formation of blood clots, improve immune function and act as antioxidants. Research has also shown that a diet featuring fish protein and plant ingredients can relieve chronic bilateral otitis externa (an inflammation of the ear) in dogs.
